FAQs

What are the different types of Sponsor Licence?

There are two types of Sponsor Licence covering:

  • ‘Workers’ – for skilled or long-term employment.
  • ‘Temporary workers’ – for specific types of temporary employment.

You can apply for a Sponsor Licence which covers both categories

What is meant by Sponsor Licence reporting duties?

If you have a Sponsor Licence you will be required to use the SMS to report certain information to the Home Office within specified timescales. The following information and events must be reported:

  • A sponsored worker does not show up for work on their first day and any reason for their absence, for example, they missed their aeroplane flight.
  • A sponsored worker is absent from work for ten or more consecutive days. You must report this information no later than on the tenth day.
  • There is a notable change in the sponsored worker’s employment, for example, they are promoted, or their salary is increased or reduced.

When you submit a report through the SMS, it must also, where relevant, include the last recorded residential address, a personal email address, and contact telephone number for the sponsored worker.

What records must I keep when complying with my Sponsor Licence duties and responsibilities?

Having robust HR systems and keeping on top of recording duties is an essential part of Sponsor Licence compliance. Among other information, you will need to maintain up to date details of all migrant workers’ physical and email addresses, phone numbers, and visa/immigration details.

You can keep records on paper or electronically. The key factors are that they are kept up to date and can be accessed at short notice in the case of a Home Office compliance check visit
